It inspires the community in many ways, changing it for good. The Harry Potter series has inspired a whole generation by guiding them with many life lessons. It teaches us the meaning of friendship, loyalty, love, bravery, and standing up for what’s right.
Harry Potter has sparked a global fan community that grows on shared experiences, mutual respect, and creativity. Fans share their love for the wizarding world by using it as a platform to communicate. They use it as a platform where they can share their struggles and life stories or even discuss their thoughts and support each other. Harry Potter has shown that the magic of a mere novel extends beyond entertainment, becoming a catalyst for personal growth, compassion, and the creation of lasting supportive communities.
Inspiring Creativity Across Artistic Mediums
Harry Potter continues to inspire many sectors, mainly the artistic mediums such as music, artwork, theater, and movies. Fans have created many social platforms where they post many creations of theirs that are related to Harry Potter. Fans across the world have expressed their love for the series by creating masterpieces inspired by the novel. Fans created many projects that added depth and dimension to the Harry Potter universe building strong communities around these projects. I will try to give some examples of each medium below:
Music:
Many pieces of music are still being created by the inspiration of Harry Potter. There’s a genre called Wizard Rock (or “Wrock”) where bands write songs inspired by the characters, plotlines, and themes from the Harry Potter series. Groups like Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys capture the spirit of the wizarding world through catchy or humorous songs that have become anthems for the fans. Some of the songs are:
1. My Dad is Rich:
“My Dad is Rich” is a song that was produced by Draco and the Malfoys in 2007. This song was created in the mean of a humorous joke from the perspective of Draco, where he mocks Harry by saying he has a rich dad who is always there for him whatever wrongs he does. On the other hand, Harry has no one for him. In this song, Draco seems desperate to make his point, exaggerates his family name, and brings down Harry alongside.
2. Accio Hagrid:
The “Accio Hagrid” song was composed by Harry and the Potters in 2007. This song talks about Hagrid and his loving sight. This song describes how Hagrid is a big and buff person with a soft and warm heart whose hugs are warmer than any other. It’s a little song with catchy and sweet music that makes me happy every time I listen to it.
3. Save Ginny Weasley From Dean Thomas:
“Save Ginny Weasley From Dean Thomas,” another song by Harry and the Potters, was released in 2010. This song is about the feelings of Harry Potter for Ginny Weasley and how he wanted to date her but couldn’t as he didn’t want to lose her just like his Parents and Sirius Black. You can say it is a slightly romantic song that expresses Harry’s feelings towards Ginny.
4. The Bravest Man I Ever Knew:
“The Bravest Man I Ever Knew” is a song that is one of my favorite Wrock genres, composed by the Ministry of Magic band in 2008. It’s my favorite cause this song is about my favorite character Professor Severus Snape. This song describes Snape’s bravery and sacrifice and what a great man he was who devoted his whole life to the child of his love. The child was also the child of his school bully. I just love the character of Snape and this song has my heart. You should give it a try as well.
Theater and performance:
Theater and performance have also thrived within the fandom. Beyond the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play, there are many more plays that were played by unofficial productions. One of the plays is named Puffs, a comedic play that describes the side of the “Hufflepuff perspective” of the story. This performance has also gained popularity among fans for its lighthearted takes on familiar events and characters.
Fan Filmmakers:
Fans have created many films that were so amazing in both the characters’ casting, impressive visual effects, and storytelling skills that they can become rivals to the main Harry Potter professional production. These fan-made films mainly focus on the stories that weren’t covered by the main films or the novel. These movies delve into untold stories within the Harry Potter Universe. Two of the fanmade movies are:
1. Voldemort: Origins of the Heir:
“Voldemort: Origins of the Heir” is an English-language Italian fantasy film directed by Gianmaria Pezzato and with Stefano Prestia as executive producer. It was under the production company Tryangle Films and released on January 13, 2018. This film is a prequel to the main Harry Potter movie where it describes Voldemort’s past and how he became The Dark Lord from Tom Riddle.
2. Severus Snape and the Marauders:
“Severus Snape and the Marauders” is a short film written and directed by Justin Zagri and premiered on Broad Strokes Productions’ YouTube channel on March 1, 2016. This is a film that shows how James Potter and other Marauders were bullies to Snape. The scene unfolds as the four friends of the Marauders are celebrating their Hogwarts graduation at a bar, and Snape comes to confront them for the final time.
These creative projects demonstrate how Harry Potter has become more than a series of books or films. Through music, theater, and fan films, the Harry Potter series inspires a legacy of creativity that allows fans to celebrate and reimagine the magic in new, dynamic ways.
Promoting Compassion and Social Awareness
Harry Potter continues to inspire readers to become kind, loving, and moralistic. Throughout the series, characters constantly demonstrate compassion and resilience, showing readers the importance of standing up for others even when it’s difficult. For example, Hermione always trusted Harry and had his back no matter how difficult the moment was. Another example of Hermione Granger’s activism can be seen when she stands up for the house-elves rights. These scenes encourage the readers to become better people and stand up for the victim’s rights and against injustice.
Harry Potter has become a tool for the fans to channel a sense of social awareness. One of the most prominent examples is the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA), a fan-driven organization that uses the series’ messages to inspire activism around issues like education, equality, and environmental justice. It fights against real-world issues, empowering fans to take action in their communities.
Building a Global Community of Fans
Harry Potter has become a way of communication for the fans. They have created a different world of Harry Potter where all the fans come together to make a union. There are so many social media pages where the fans interact with each other and keep the magic alive. People share their ideas and thoughts on these platforms and spread love among the Harry Potter followers. Fans have created online events where they perform music or cosplays of their favorite characters of Harry Potter. There are many platforms where the Potterheads come to attend and display their talents. At some events, fans can even meet with the characters who played roles in the Harry Potter movies.
LeakyCon is a yearly convention that celebrates the Harry Potter universe. Fans from all over the world come to celebrate. The film’s actors and creators from the film series, wizard rock bands, prominent groups, and big-name fans came to join the celebration as well. This event can be celebrated at any place it kind of has a tour and gets held at various places of the world. Mischief Management, a convention management company founded by author and journalist Melissa Anell, organizes this convention every year. Though the convention was originally hosted by The Leaky Cauldron, a fan site run by Anelli. Fans come and enjoy their moments with the characters where they get a chance to perform with their creation. They can also experience Harry Potter-themed programming, panels, performances, meetups, interviews, autographs, and photo ops. It’s a dream for every Harry Potter fan to attend one of these conventions once in their life. And you can assume I am one of them. Harry Potter continues to inspire every aspect of our lives.
